Many people are unaware that albinos are subject to bigotry, official discrimination, torture or even death in Africa, and still suffer discrimination worldwide. We’re working –centered in Africa–to help Albinos organize, share stories, and alert officials and community leaders to the problem. REPORT from Alagie and his team:
In Gambia my association took part in last year ‘s world disability day celebration held on the 3rd december which took a form of a march pass from the city centre named kairaba avanue to the GAMBIA organisation for the visually impaired GOVI COMPLEX in Kanifing.
There a seminar was held witness by stakeholders from different disabled-help organisations in the GAMBIA including the great Gambian born sociologist Mr Halifa Sallah who spoke about disablity rights and plights and also the African charter on humans and peoples rights centre in the Gambia.
Our association was represented all whom are albinos. Our association is the National Society of Albinos GAMBIA (NASA) as the acronym.we already have our constitution and struggling now to register formaly with the justice department….
Also– the Gambia federation for the disabled will conduct its general meeting on the 4th feb- 2012 and so NASA OUR Own will be there to attend. Still we albinos as any other disabled persoos will not let go but rather strive hard and be committed to advocacy and support initiatives for empowerment… .
